Did Sony or Bungie Pull the Plug on a Decade-Long Legacy

A lone Destiny 2 Guardian looking at a burning, destroyed sci-fi server hub building with a large red 'Cancelled' sign across the top, symbolizing the game's end.

Destiny 2 Cancelled

As a dedicated Guardian who has personally spent the last five years exploring the solar system, fighting the Darkness, and investing hundreds of hard-earned dollars into expansions, season passes, and Eververse cosmetics, I am absolutely furious. Destiny 2 has been a massive staple of the gaming landscape since its initial launch back in 2017. The sudden news that active live-service support is abruptly ending on June 9th feels like a colossal slap in the face to a loyal community that kept this universe alive for nearly a decade.

The burning question sweeping through the community is simple: who is actually responsible for this sudden execution? Is it Sony, the corporate overlord who acquired the studio for $3.6 billion, or is it Bungie themselves, who have suffered through years of internal mismanagement, financial misses, and brutal layoff cycles?

The Case Against Sony: The Corporate Axe

Ever since Sony stepped into the picture, there has been palpable tension behind the scenes. Sony bought Bungie to spearhead its aggressive push into live-service gaming, but recent financial reports paint a bleak picture, highlighting millions in losses due to Destiny 2 underperforming. Did PlayStation executives look at the declining player counts, look at their bottom line, and decide to unilaterally pull the plug? Forcing a June 9th shutdown date for new content feels like a cold, calculated corporate decision made by executives who don’t understand the heavy emotional and financial investments players have made.

The Case Against Bungie: Mismanagement and Broken Promises

On the flip side, Bungie leadership cannot escape the blame. For years, players tolerated recycled content, sunsetting, and aggressive monetization because we loved the core gameplay loop. Yet, behind closed doors, Bungie has severely struggled with meeting goals and internal stability. Reports indicate that most of the rank-and-file staff didn’t even know active development was ending until the public announcement went live. Did leadership simply give up, leaving Destiny 3 ungreenlit just to throw all their remaining eggs into the Marathon basket?

The Ultimate Betrayal

Regardless of whether it was Sony’s corporate impatience or Bungie’s upper-management failures, the result remains identical: the players lose. To end major support on June 9th for a legendary franchise that has thrived since 2017 is a betrayal of the highest order. We deserved a grand, continuing future—not to be left standing in a static, abandoned universe.

Guardians Fight Back: The Destiny 3 Petition

Regardless of whether it was Sony’s corporate impatience or Bungie’s upper-management failures, the result remains identical: the players lose. But the community isn’t going down without a fight. In a desperate bid to save the franchise, heartbroken fans have mobilized, launching a massive Change.org petition asking Sony to develop Destiny 3. Surpassing over 197,687 signatures in mere days, the movement is a powerful testament to the community’s refusal to let this universe bleed out.

To end major support on June 9th for a legendary franchise that has thrived since 2017 is a betrayal of the highest order. We deserved a grand, continuing future—not to be left standing in an abandoned universe. If Sony wants to recover its massive investment, they need to listen to the thousands of Guardians signing their names and greenlight the sequel we earned.
